How to Choose the Right Phone Screen Protector

Dropping your phone is inevitable. The question is whether your screen survives. Screen protectors are cheap insurance, but the options are confusing. Let's simplify it.

Types of Screen Protectors

Tempered Glass — The Standard Choice

Made from chemically hardened glass, these are the most popular option for good reason. They feel identical to your phone's actual screen, offer excellent scratch resistance (9H hardness), and absorb impact well. Typical price: $5-15.

Pros: Best feel, great clarity, absorbs drops well.

Cons: Can shatter on impact (but that's it doing its job), slightly thicker.

TPU Film — The Flexible Option

Thin, flexible plastic film that self-heals minor scratches. Popular on curved-screen phones because it wraps around edges better than rigid glass. Typical price: $3-10.

Pros: Self-healing, great for curved screens, thinnest option.

Cons: Rubbery feel, less scratch-resistant than glass, can yellow over time.

Ceramic/Matte Film — The Anti-Glare Pick

Ceramic or matte protectors reduce glare and reflections dramatically. They also prevent fingerprint smudges from being visible. Great for outdoor use.

Pros: No glare, less fingerprint visibility, good for outdoor use.

Cons: Reduces screen clarity slightly, colors look less vibrant.

Our Recommendation

For most people, a tempered glass protector in the $8-12 range is the sweet spot. Get one with oleophobic coating (resists fingerprints) and 2.5D curved edges for a seamless feel. Brand doesn't matter much — even generic ones perform well if they're 9H hardness rated.

For curved Samsung or OnePlus screens, go with a TPU film since glass won't adhere properly to curved edges without UV adhesive (which is messy to apply).

Replace your protector every 6-12 months or immediately after any crack — a damaged protector actually reduces protection.
